Why do we need an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR)

2020-06-24

The automatic voltage regulator(AVR) mainly solves the unstable situation of the power grid in life. The interference or destruction often occurs in the power grid in the following situations:

1. Power surges: The effective value of the output voltage is 110% higher than the rated value, and the occurrence time is one or several cycles.

The surge is mainly due to the high voltage generated by the power grid when the large electrical equipment connected to the power grid is shut down and suddenly unloaded.

2, high voltage spikes (high voltage spikes): refers to the peak value of 6000v, the duration of time from one ten thousandth of a second to one half cycle (10ms) voltage.

Mostly because of lightning strikes, arc discharges, static discharges, or switching operations of large electrical equipment.

3. Transient overvoltage (switching transients): refers to a pulse voltage with a peak voltage of up to 20,000V, but with a duration between one millionth of a second and one ten thousandth of a second.

The damage caused is generally similar to high-voltage spikes, but the solution is different.

4. Voltage sags: refers to the low-voltage state where the effective value of the mains voltage is between 80% and 85% of the rated value, and the low-voltage duration lasts one to several cycles.

Turning on large equipment, starting large motors, or connecting large power transformers may cause voltage sags.

5. Noise (electrical line noise): radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EFI) and various other high frequency interference. Motor operation, relay operation,

The noise of the wires caused by the operation of the motor controller, broadcast emission, microwave radiation, and electrical storms, etc.

6, frequency deviation (frequency variation): generally refers to the frequency change of the power grid exceeds about 3Hz. Most of them are caused by the unstable operation of the generator, or the power supply with unstable frequency.

Unstable voltage can cause fatal injury or malfunction of precision electrical equipment. At the same time, it accelerates the aging of the electrical equipment, shortens the life span and even burns the accessories, causing greater losses.

Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) are indispensable for electrical equipment, especially high-tech products with strict voltage requirements and imported precision electrical equipment, which also prompted KEBO to develop high-tech and more advanced voltage regulators to meet various demand for precision equipment.
